Selecting a College for Early Childhood Education

Embarking on a journey in early childhood education (ECE) is an exciting step toward shaping young minds and making a lasting impact. One of the most important decisions you’ll face is selecting the right college to support your goals and what works for your life. There are many things to consider when choosing a college such as the learning format that works best for your life, transportation to and from college, child care for student parents, transfer degrees, and specialty areas.

What Course Format Works Best for Me?

There are three different learning environments to choose from when accessing higher education: in-person, synchronous, and asynchronous courses. Let’s check out the difference:

  • In Person – Courses held physically on campus or in a classroom. You attend on scheduled days/times and interact directly with instructors and peers.
  • Synchronous – Courses are online but require attendance at set times for live lectures, discussions, or activities either on Zoom or in person on campus.
  • Asynchronous – Courses are entirely online with no set meeting times. You complete lectures, readings, and assignments on your own schedule within deadlines.

Check out this quick and friendly comparison chart to explore the differences between in-person, synchronous, and asynchronous courses! Whether you’re looking for flexibility, live interaction, or a campus experience, each option offers something unique. Think about what fits your lifestyle, learning style, and daily routine best—especially when it comes to things like schedule, transportation, and how you like to connect with others.

Let’s find the learning style that fits you!

Feature In-Person Synchronous Asynchronous
Schedule Flexibility Low Medium High
Real-Time Interaction High Medium Low
Self-Paced Learning No No Yes

* Must have computer/laptop and reliable internet access.

Let’s Talk Transportation

In-person classes mean you’ll be heading to campus, soaking in the college experience, and maybe discovering your favorite coffee spot on the way. Is transportation a challenge or roadblock? With synchronous or asynchronous online courses, you have the opportunity to complete course work at home or at a local library.

College students can receive free OmniTrans transportation:

Once you’re enrolled in college, don’t forget to grab your student ID card—it’s your golden ticket to ride the OmniTrans bus for FREE! Yes, you read that right—unlimited rides at no cost! Whether you’re commuting to class, heading to a study session, or just exploring the area, your student ID saves you serious cash.

Hey Student Parents—This One’s for You!

If you’re a parent or caregiver to a young child and still want to attend college in person, we’ve got great news—you don’t have to choose between your education and your child’s care! Many community colleges and universities offer on-campus child care centers, where your little one can learn and thrive with high-quality early childhood educators while you focus on your classes and studies. Currently, the program CCAMPIS* at CSUSB helps eligible student parents to receive 75–100% of their child care tuition covered, plus access to free parenting workshops, support resources, and even a dedicated study space just for student parents. *This program is federally funded and may not always be available.

Your dreams don’t have to wait—and you don’t have to do it alone!

What Is an Associate for Transfer Degree

An Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer (AA-T) or Associate in Science Degree for Transfer (AS-T) is a special type of associate degree designed to make it easier for students at community colleges to transfer to a four-year university—usually within the same state system. Our local community colleges in San Bernardino and Riverside County have partnered with CSUSB as well as other CSU’s to ensure Child Development and Early Childhood Education students complete lower division courses required for their program.
