Valentine’s Day Celebrations for the Whole Family
It’s here, the season of white, red, pink and glittery hearts. The time of year when we may emphasize just how much we love those around us with a little extra enthusiasm. February seems like a needed break in what can feel like a long winter season, a bright holiday after a quiet January. With the fuzzy-good feelings of Valentine’s Day and the promise of spring right around the corner, it’s a good time to try new crafts, make treats, and sing songs with the ones you like and love!
On Valentine’s Day
Why not try a love bug craft, these are a perfect option for preschool age kids. Best of all they are an anything-goes-craft meaning as long as you have the toilet paper rolls, or halved paper towel rolls, you can dress them up with anything in your arts and crafts kits. Ideas include:
- Markers
- Construction or tissue paper
- Pipe Cleaner
- Paint
- Googly eyes
- Skewers
- Glue
- Glitter
- Washi tape
- Stickers
To get started, paint, color, or cover the rolls with paper or tape. Then, have an adult poke three holes on each side of the roll. These holes should line up to thread the pipe cleaner thru to form the bug’s six legs. Cut out heart shapes using the construction paper and glue the pointed end to the side of the roll to act as wings. Use paper or more pipe cleaners to make the antennas. If using paper, you can cut a heart shape at the top of the antenna. Finally, have fun making the face using markers, google eyes, stickers and so on. Aren’t they cute? It’s You I like
“It’s You I Like” from Mr. Rogers is a classic song that celebrates liking someone just as they are. This is a wonderful Valentine, or anytime, message! To share a sing-along moment with your little ones, follow along with Mr. Rogers with the “It’s you I like” lyrics below.
It’s you I like,
It’s not the things you wear,
It’s not the way you do your hair
But it’s you I like
The way you are right now,
The way down deep inside you
Not the things that hide you,
Not your toys
They’re just beside you.
But it’s you I like
Every part of you.
Your skin, your eyes, your feelings
Whether old or new.
I hope that you’ll remember
Even when you’re feeling blue
That it’s you I like,
It’s you yourself
It’s you.
It’s you I like.
(Fred Rogers, 1970)
Happy Valentine’s Day, may it be an especially lovely one!
